Hats Off or on - headwear fashion trends through the seasons

Are you a 'hat person'...I am and I have so many I've lost count. As I spend a lot of time out walking and taking photos on the coast and in the countryside I've highlighted practical all-weather headwear suitable for rain, high winds and cold snaps. Recent summer trends included traditional Panama and ultra wide-brimmed straw hats and boaters. Big Japanese style Sun visors have been popular but Bucket hats seem to have taken over from traditional Baseball caps for Summer daze and festival season. Mad hatters continue to go 'over the top' on Spring and Summer race days and lets not forget the posh classic country style (think Cotswold, Exmoor, Dartmoor) felt Fedora seen around estates, dog walkers, on farming folk and at local Agricultural Shows. The Fedora is normally in earthy colours with a leather band, topped off with a feather. Lets not forget the flat cap which has become a massive fashion trend after being worn by Cillian Murphy's character Tommy Shelby in the hit TV series Peaky Blinders. Today it can be seen on both guys and gals, all age groups in town and country. 

All-weather Spring, Summer and Autumn when its still a bit nippy but sun protection is vital. Popular choice nowadays is traditional rain/shower proof Western (Cowboy) hats, with strap for windy days or wide brimmed waxed cotton Canadian style Tilley hat light, cool, great for walking and hiking and of course ever-popular Baseball Caps.

 

Must-have Winter warmers include woollen Beanies and Bobble hats in all colours, Berets and Cossack style sheepskin hats and faux fur Bucket hats. Fleece-lined thermal ski and snow hats with ear flaps or headbands so cosy for extreme cold days.


Throughout the decades hats have been a significant sign of occasion and status:

 

Top Hat (High Hat) still worn at weddings, formal occasions and race horsing events today.

 

Bowler Hat, "quintessential attire  of City of London gents in the early 1900s, a tradition that lasted until the 1970s."

 

Fedora Worn with pride by men and women from Royalty, pop stars, movie stars and dubious characters of notoriety. It's been a staple wardrobe accessory in city, town and country since the 19th Century but had a rebirth when worn by lead character, Indiana Jones, in the fantastic movie 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' starring Harrison Ford in 1981.


Deer Stalker worn by country estate gents and game keepers and more famously Sherlock Holmes (Creating a Deerstalker was recently featured on an Episode 8 of the The Great Sewing Bee)

 

Newsboy cap (Eight-panelled) or similar Flat Cap working class headwear with North of England roots as seen now on celebrities. Was very fashionable back in the late 60s 70s mainly made of tweed or chord, the Beatles wore leather versions, John Lennon's friend, Helen Anderson designed and made a Greek Fisherman's leather  cap  for him. The name of the Flat Cap gets very confusing Flat Cap, Newsboy, Baker etc. all slightly different in design but you get the picture. There are lots of pictures online of The Beatles, John and Yoko in a variety of headwear.

 

French Cloche 1920s flapper and 19th Century Beret having a comeback. The Beret was worn by men and women through the ages and was a traditional accessory for kids school uniform.  FYI "The 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt was well known for wearing a beret and may have inspired the beret's association with artists."

Shades of Summer. Vintage forever sunglasses

After a winter of storms and grey sky days it was great to see that glimmer of light, however, bright sunshine is ok but not for the eyes so a decent bonafide pair of UV protection glasses are a must and what brand could be more synonymous with Summer and sunlight than a pair of iconic Ray-Ban sunglasses . The ones in the picture below were a treasured gift from a loved one over twenty years ago, a pair of 80s vintage Wayfarer (Bausch & Lomb) and Aviators (Luxottica).  The luxury brand was created in 1936 when the company was commissioned by the US Army to produce eyewear for pilots, check the link below to read the full history of this well established, ever-popular product and its makers. Autumn highlights and nothing can sparkle more than the glitterati dressed in designer garb at Fashion Week . Wow the juggernaut that is Fashion Week is still driving around the world from New York across the Atlantic Ocean to London , Milan and Paris. TV, music and movie celebrities strutted their stuff on arrival, down the runway and on the front row. Stand-out moments included those iconic much-loved Ad Fab darlings Patsy and Edina at the Burberry front row in London and the 'face to face' meeting of the fictitious Runway editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly in Devil Wears Prada and a real life American Vogue stalwart.   I've been following online and on social media and amazingly the stand-out moment for me was a reel featuring a well-known English actor at the Burberry show sporting what was once known as a ' Donkey Jacket '.
